What is linen fabric?

A textile made from flax seed plant fibres, linen boasts numerous features, including strength, absorbency and the ability to quick-dry. Such qualities make it ideal to wear in hot conditions.

How do I care for linen?

We recommend a gentle cold wash by hand or machine. You could also try adding a small amount (1/2 a capful) of baby shampoo to your rinsing water, as this helps to keep natural linens soft. Line dry outdoors but be aware that if drying linen in direct sunlight, darker colours may fade. After your linen has dried, spray it with a soft mist of water and gently iron. If you’ve purchased any of our washed linens, they do not require pre-washing.

Can I use fabric softener on linen?

Avoid using fabric softener on linen as it can leave an unpleasant residue.

Can I use bleach on linen?

No - bleach is linen’s nemesis. It can immediately damage the fibres and/or compromise their integrity over time.

Can you dye linen fabric?

Yes - linen and natural dyes work together wonderfully. You can use a number of dying methods - a dye bath, the stovetop or in the washing machine. Just be sure you’re using the recommended fabric-to-dye ratio and have washed and dried it before dying.

Is 100% linen better than cotton?

The thing we love most about linen is that it keeps getting better with age. Given linen’s strength, it will maintain integrity longer than cotton and will become softer over time.

What is the highest quality linen fabric?

The industry regards European linen (notably from Belgium and Western Europe) as the world leader in quality. Why? They typically contain 85% minimum European flax fibre and are woven in these countries. Moreover, thanks to certificates of origin, it is fairly straightforward to track the material’s progeny.

What is the softest type of linen?

This can be quite a subjective topic. Stonewashed linen and fabric with a high thread count are often considered very soft. Certainly, any type of linen should become softer over time.
